What PNG to JXL is for
Use this tool to convert a PNG into a JPEG XL file that is often smaller while staying lossless. It encodes the .jxl in your browser and preserves any transparency in the PNG.
- Create a JPEG XL copy of a PNG that is often smaller and still lossless.
- Shrink large lossless images for archival storage.
- Keep transparency while moving to a next-generation format.
- Batch-convert PNGs to JXL locally in your browser.
Best practices for better results
Image optimization works best when you choose the right balance between file size, visual quality, dimensions, format compatibility and privacy. These tips help you get a cleaner result.
- Set quality to 100 for a lossless JXL that may be smaller than the PNG.
- JXL suits archival storage where compatibility is not urgent.
- Transparency carries over, so it works for graphics and logos.
- Keep the PNG if you still need a universally supported file.
What happens to your images?
When you choose a file, your browser reads it locally and creates the processed version on your own device. CompressImage.ca does not receive the original image or the finished file.
That local-first approach is useful for personal photos, client work, screenshots, documents, product images and other files you do not want to upload to a third-party server.
When to use another tool
The best tool depends on what you are trying to fix. Compression reduces file size, resizing changes dimensions, conversion changes format, cropping changes framing, and metadata removal cleans hidden information from the file.
| Goal | Best tool |
|---|---|
| Make a file smaller | Compress Image |
| Hit an exact file size | Compress Image to Size |
| Change image dimensions | Resize Image |
| Create WebP files for websites | Convert to WebP |
| Convert iPhone photos | HEIC to JPG |
| Remove hidden photo data | Remove EXIF |

PNG to JXL FAQ
Why convert PNG to JXL?
JPEG XL lossless mode often beats PNG on file size while keeping identical quality, which is useful for shrinking large lossless images and future-proof archives.
Is the conversion lossless?
Set the quality to 100 for a fully lossless JPEG XL copy of the PNG. Lower values trade a little quality for a smaller file.
Does transparency carry over?
Yes. JPEG XL supports transparency, so any alpha channel in the PNG is preserved in the JXL.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The PNG is decoded and the JPEG XL is encoded entirely in your browser, so your image never leaves your device.
