PNG compression: the complete guide
PNG compression works on a completely different principle than JPEG. A PNG never throws away visual detail. Instead, smart PNG compression reduces the number of colors the file stores. A standard PNG-24 can describe over 16 million colors, but your logo or screenshot probably uses a few hundred, and all those unused possibilities still cost bytes.
The fix is called color quantization, and it is what our Smart mode does:
- Analyze every color actually used in your image
- Group the colors your eye cannot tell apart
- Build an optimized palette of up to 256 colors
- Remap each pixel to its nearest palette match
- Apply lossless compression on top of the result
How much smaller does a PNG get?
Typical results by image type, relative to the original PNG-24:
Smart mode or Lossless mode?
- Smart for logos, icons, screenshots, illustrations: the big savings live here
- Lossless when every pixel must stay byte for byte identical: OxiPNG re-packs the file structure with zero visual change
- Watch for banding: smooth gradients like skies can show faint stepping in Smart mode. If you see it, switch to Lossless or take the photo style image to WebP instead
