Best practices for better results

Image optimization works best when you choose the right balance between file size, visual quality, dimensions, format compatibility and privacy. These tips help you get a cleaner result.

  • Use a quality setting around 80 to 85 for photos when you want a strong balance of size and visual quality.
  • Use format-specific tools when you know the source format: JPEG for photos, PNG for screenshots and WebP for modern websites.
  • Keep your original files. Compression creates smaller copies, but the original is still your safest backup.
  • Resize very large images before compression if they are much bigger than the size you need.

How image compression actually works

Compress an image and you are doing one of two things. Lossy compression (JPEG, WebP) removes the visual detail your eye is least likely to notice. Lossless compression (PNG) repacks the exact same pixels into a more efficient container. Our compressor picks the right strategy per file, then hands you the quality slider.

Why can a 5 MB photo shrink to 600 KB without looking different? Cameras record far more information than screens can display. For sharing and uploading, most of that data is dead weight.

Compress without losing quality

"Without losing quality" honestly means "without losing quality you can see," and that line sits around quality 80 to 85 for photographs:

  • 85 and up: files grow fast for differences that are invisible on screen
  • 75 to 85: the sweet spot, big savings with no visible change
  • Below 70: visible softness starts trading places with smaller numbers

PNG graphics play by different rules: Smart mode optimizes the color palette for 60 to 80 percent savings, or switch to Lossless when every pixel byte must stay identical.
