When converting JPG to PNG makes sense

Three real reasons. First, compatibility: a workflow, plugin, or system that strictly requires PNG input. Second, editing: PNG is lossless, so if an image is about to go through repeated edit and save cycles, converting it to PNG once stops further quality decay, since every JPG re-save costs a little detail. Third, graphics extraction: a chart or screenshot that was wrongly saved as JPG will at least stop degrading once it lives in PNG.

The honest limitation

Converting JPG to PNG cannot improve the image. The detail JPG compression removed is gone permanently, and no format change brings it back. A PNG made from a JPG looks exactly like the JPG, only stored losslessly from this point forward, and usually in a noticeably larger file. It also does not create transparency: JPGs have no transparent regions to preserve, so the PNG arrives fully opaque.

Worth knowing: expect the PNG to be 3 to 10 times larger than the source JPG. That is normal. Lossless storage of photographic detail is expensive, which is exactly why JPG exists.

Batch conversion, locally

If your actual goal is smaller files rather than format compliance, you want the JPEG compressor or a WebP conversion instead, both of which move file sizes in the friendlier direction.
