AVIF: the newest image format worth knowing
AVIF is built on the AV1 video codec and currently delivers the best compression of any mainstream image format: typically 20 to 30 percent smaller than WebP and around half the size of JPEG at comparable visual quality. It handles transparency, wide color, and HDR. The catch has always been support, but that story is now settled in modern browsers.
